Internationalization Consulting

Internationalization (i18n) is the key step to preparing your products for a smooth and inexpensive localization process as well as the international success of your products. Internationalization generally requires a combination of technical and international expertise. A properly internationalized product will reduce localization cost and ensure timely delivery to new markets and clients.

The concept of internationalization is quite broad and by no means limited to software products. All types of documentation, product packaging, web content, email advertising, marketing collateral, videos, audio tracks, e-Learning sites or even business presentations are affected as well.

Below is a list of common areas for internationalization:

  • Documentation that allows for text expansion in other languages (no tightly packed documents)
  • Graphics and Illustrations in which text can easily be exchanged for another language
  • Separation of textual elements form graphical elements to ensure cost efficient localization
  • Allowing space in user interface layout to ensure that language expansion will not become an issue
  • Allowing for unique interface sizing so that interfaces can be tailored for each language or group of languages
  • Avoid unified sizing, unless the user interface is very simple
  • Ensure proper language support for right to left (RTL) languages and languages requiring multi-byte character codes
  • Allow and properly process foreign character input
  • Make certain that country specific information can be represented (i.e. phone numbers, tax identification numbers, social security, dates and times, zip codes and addresses, countries and regions...)
  • Allow for easy exchanging of graphics or illustrations that may be offensive to some markets
  • Separate language elements from code elements to increase localization productivity and timeline and also protect your intellectual property.
  • Avoid idioms as much as possible as they generally do not transfer into other markets.

Our Engineering, Development and Testing teams at PTIGlobal have years of experience with internationalization and can help you realize this major step towards a successful product launch in new markets.
